This photo was taken in the Sepik Basin area of Papua New Guinea. Along the banks of the Sepik river and its many tributaries live sparsely-scattered remote villages, scarcely contacted by the outside world, where people live a lifestyle that has changed little for thousands of years. All transportation is on the water by canoe. From where this image was taken, the nearest hospital is 6 days away. Unfortunately, child mortality is high; one child in 13 dies before reaching the age of 5.
