This image of a novice monk (I like to call them “monklets” but the official term is “samanera”) was taken in Bagan, Myanmar which was founded in the second century A.D.  In its heyday, Bagan’s rulers and its wealthy subjects constructed over 10,000 religious monuments.  Located in an active earthquake zone, Bagan suffered from many earthquakes over the ages which damaged most of the structures.  Today 2229 temples and pagodas remain, many of which are unrestored (like this one).  In 2019 Bagan was officially inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
